The Festival
The Festival
Now going into its twenty third edition, Magma – mostra di cinema breve has so far examined over 11.000 short films coming from 95 countries of the world, reaching a total attendance of about 17.300 festival goers and standing out as one of the best short film festivals in Italy. In addition to the international competition, the programme offers special sections devoted to producers or distributors of the short film.
In contrast to bigger Italian film festivals, Magma has always focused on the short film, considering it as a separate art form, as a format allowing the experimentation of new styles and the creation of new trends, the presentation of works from both first-time amateurs and established directors. The festival offers a chance of visibility for high-value works that are often precluded from the main distribution channels.
Its aim is to build a bridge between the audience and the endless forms of expression of the short format, from genres including documentary, animation, narrative and experimental. Over the past editions, Magma has successfully tried to create and intensify inspiring collaborations with other distinctive international film festivals – such as Encounters Film Festival, Off Plus Camera (Poland), Zagreb Film Festival, Fest Anča (Slovakia), Tirana International Film Festival, Leeds International Film Festival (UK), Glasgow Short Film Festival, Jameson Cinefest International Film Festival Miskolc (Hungary), In the Palace International Short Film Festival (Bulgaria) – as well as producers or distributors of the short film: ACE – Agencia del Cortometraje Español, FAMU- Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Comma Film from Manchester.

Associazione Culturale Scarti
Associazione Culturale Scarti
Based in Acireale, the creation of Associazione Culturale Scarti was inspired in 2001 by Lorenzo Vecchio, to whose memory the Festival Grand Prix is dedicated. From the very beginning, the association has aimed at cultural promotion, giving special attention to cinema and visual arts. Through Magma, its members – many of whom now live outside Sicily – continue to develop a project which for nineteen years has been contributing to increasing the value of the local area by showcasing the most outstanding international short film talent. For over ten years, together with other local associations, Scarti has been running the youth centre Mistero Buffo that offers a wide range of activities.
Since 2013 Scarti has started to make short films again, mainly focusing on documentaries about the history of Sicilian culture and folklore. After Suoni D’OC (2013), focused on the luthier Giuseppe Severini, the Sicily Folk Doc saw the production of three short films (A lu cielu chianau, 2015, The day of the wall ,2017, Holy Water, 2018) and a feature documentary Mysteries, 2022). The last production is Mother Stone (2024).
